Coastal AgroBusiness is pleased to announce the 2016-2017 recipients of the J.C. Whitehurst, Jr. Agricultural Scholarship. Last April, the NC State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) selected James Harrison Ferebee, IV and Billie Jalynne Waters to receive this honor.

Billie Waters is a sophomore majoring in Plant and Soil Science with an interest in crop biotechnology. Having grown up on her family’s farm in Chocowinity, NC, she has always been interested in agriculture, and she explains “my short time at NC State has shown me that agriculture is much more important than I ever imagined”. Billie volunteers as a CALS ambassador representing the school by recruiting prospective students, educating peers and networking with professionals, and she is also a member of the NC State Marching Band and Christian fraternity Chi Alpha.

Harrison Ferebee, a senior majoring in Agribusiness Management, has made the Dean’s list multiple times and is an active member of the Agronomy Club. He has experience working on several farms including his family’s farm in Currituck County. After graduation, he plans to return to his family’s farm to work in operations.

In its fourth year, this merit-based scholarship is awarded to two qualified students who are pursuing degrees related to agriculture or agribusiness in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). The scholarship was established to invest in the potential of bright students, who will be tomorrow’s leaders in an important industry which greatly impacts the economies of NC, SC and VA.
