Coastal is pleased to introduce the two recipients of the JC Whitehurst, Jr. Agricultural Scholarship for 2018-2019 academic year.

A senior majoring in Agricultural Business, Ma’lik Carver hopes to use his degree to either work with AgCarolina as a loan officer or work in cooperative extension in his home county of Pasquotank. He enjoys his course of study because he is able to connect with the NC agriculture community as well as gain knowledge and experience in communications, economics and accounting. Ma’lik is a first generation college student who serves as a CALS (College of Agriculture and Life Science) Ambassador introducing other students to CALS.

Also a senior, Alex Fox is a Plant and Soil Science major with a concentration in Agronomic Business Management. Alex was raised on a farm in Iredell County, and is knowledgeable about the critical issues farmers experience.  He hopes his degree will help him educate others in the future. Through recent internship experience, Alex has gained experience with guidance systems for both John Deere and Case IH equipment. Alex works as a volunteer firefighter/EMT for Trinity Volunteer Fire Department while in school.

In its sixth year, the JC Whitehurst, Jr. Agricultural Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship, awarded to two qualified students who are pursuing degrees related to agriculture or agribusiness in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). The scholarship was established to invest in the potential of bright students, who will be tomorrow’s leaders in an important industry which greatly impacts the economies of NC, SC and VA.
